Communication research for health care providers

Thomas Doukas, Choice Support's Head of Inclusive Research & Involvement, has been appointed as a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London.

Choice Support is assisting with research to more effectively communicate health care. It will provide information and direction to healthcare providers about the best way to communicate health information to people with learning disabilities in an effective and efficient manner.

Thomas Doukas, Choice Support's Head of Inclusive Research & Involvement, has been appointed as a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London to assist with a research project called Health Communication and Learning Disabilities (HCLD).

Headed by researcher Dr Deborah Chinn, who is attached to the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery and the Centre for Language, Discourse and Communication.  The research is funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and investigates how doctors and nurses communicate with people with learning disabilities.

People with learning disabilities and their carers will participate and be video-recorded while attending health checks and health consultations. The video-recordings will be transcribed and analysed using a method called conversation analysis. This involves a very detailed examination of verbal and non-verbal aspects of communication and will highlight communicative strategies that promote the involvement and decision making of patients with learning disabilities.
