Supported living conference: a service or a life?

A service or a life? Learning Disability England (LDE) asks this question at their supported living conference in Manchester on 22 November.

Choice Support is a founding member of both LDE and the Association of Quality Checkers (AQC), who together with Paradigm and The National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi) are co-hosting the conference.

LDE, a membership organisation for individuals, families and professionals, pulls together a shared voice from across learning disabilities in England. Most importantly people with a learning disability are supported to self-advocate and take a leading voice both within and on behalf of LDE.

LDE focuses on issues decided by its members such as housing, supported living and independent living. In consultation LDE members, self-advocates and families have said that attitudes, funding, better opportunities and support were the issues most important to them.

Dr Thomas Doukas, Choice Support’s involvement manager and the AQC will be leading a discussion at the conference on the work of Quality Checking and its role in inclusive research. Choice Support was one of the first organisations to employ people with learning disabilities to Quality Check services.

As our Managing Director Sarah Maguire says: “Quality Checkers see things that the rest of us miss.”

Quality Checkers bring a uniquely informed perspective to their work, because of their first-hand experience of services.
