MyPA is a new service in Milton Keynes that can help you find and manage personal assistants.

What is a PA?

A personal assistant (PA) is someone who can help you do the things you need help with, so you can live the life you want. This can vary depending on what you want to do, but it might include:

  • getting involved in new activities, hobbies or education
  • practical support with things like shopping, cooking or travelling
  • going to work. 

You could have a PA for an hour a week or 30 hours a week. It depends what you want help with. Some people have several PAs who help them with different parts of their lives.

Who can have a personal assistant?

Anyone can employ PAs, but the most common route is through individual budgets. An individual budget is a sum of money local authorities give to people eligible for support, which they can use to buy the support they want. 

If you have an individual budget – or if you have other income – you can use it to employ your own PAs.

People tell us having their own PAs makes a real difference:

“Having a team of PAs has changed all our lives. Tim goes out every Saturday with his PAs and gets on with life. Apparently it’s just not cool to have mum and dad around all the time!” (Tim’s mum).

How we work

Having your own PA is a way of taking control of your life and support, but it can be hard finding someone suitable and organising things like how they are paid. MyPA can help you with this.

When you contact us we will give you your own dedicated account manager who will sort everything out and be your main point of contact.

The account manager will visit you to talk through the process, your likes and dislikes, and what you want your PA(s) to do.

You can choose from one or more of the following four options:

1. Matching MyPA will match you with a PA, based on what you told us about yourself and what you want your PA to do. 

2. Payroll administration Each month your PA sends us a timesheet saying what work they have done with you. We then work out how much they should be paid, and the tax, and put this in a timesheet which we send to you. This timesheet tells you how much you need to pay your PA.

3. Payroll management Your individual budget goes straight to MyPA from the council. We work out how much your PA should be paid each month, the same way as option 2 (above). Then we pay the PA from your individual budget and send you a statement, which tells you how much money you have left in your account.

4. Staff management You could chose us to employ your PA, taking away the stresses of management but at the same time keeping control. We can also help you apply for a grant that you spend on training your PAs.

There is a one-off charge for matching. Payroll administration, payroll management and staff management have a monthly charge.
