Involving people we support

People speaking at the Big Meet, a conference run by and for people we support.

People we support shape their own services, influence how we work and speak out nationally about things that matter.

Involving people is so important that we have an involvement team to advise us. This team includes more than 70 people with learning disabilities employed to take part in our work. They help to:

  • keep people we support safer and more aware of their rights and responsibilities
  • train our staff and other disabled people to advocate for themselves.

Their work extends to influencing and changing social care nationally through partnership with many user led and campaigning organisations.

"…it was extremely gratifying and unexpected to meet (supported) individuals who not only feel they are listened to, but have had an active role to play - for instance, in joining the Board of Trustees, and in helping to monitor the quality of the project." Matrix Assessment Report, 2014. The Matrix Standard is a quality framework for organisations offering information, advice and guidance.

People with learning disabilities sit on our Board of Trustees. Choice Support Trustees oversee and govern what we do.

We have developed many innovative ways for people to tell us what they think. Close attention is given to those people we support who find it harder to communicate. We involve people through checking, monitoring and guiding our services including:

  • Quality Checkers - a team of people with learning disabilities and experience of support who are trained and paid to monitor services.
  • The Our Rights Group represents people we support from across all the regions we work in. It directly influences how we work, for example, by helping write organisational policy.

The Our Rights Group have just hosted another successful Big Meet conference for people we support which was about making healthy choices and living well. Watch the video above or read their blog which describes the day.
