Inspections are now based on five new Key Lines of Enquiry (KLOE) which are: Is this service safe, effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led?
We received positive feedback, some of which is outlined below, however, there were some negative issues that we are addressing to ensure our service quality is not affected.
Positive feedback from the CQC inspector:
“We found people were cared for by suitably trained and experienced staff who knew their needs well. Staff supported people to follow their own chosen individual routines and to take part in activities they liked, such as shopping, visiting local parks, eating out and going on holiday.”
“People’s care plans contained a good level of information setting out how each person should be supported. People were settled in the home and their representatives (family member or professional working with them) said they were happy and received good care.”
Unfortunately on 29th May 2015 we were rated as “Requires improvement” and since this rating we have been working hard on all the areas identified by the CQC to improve outcomes and quality of life for people living at Varty Road. We have informed all the next of kin and interested people and created a Continuous Improvement/Service Development Plan.
Our plan contains actions for named staff within set timescales for improvement in areas covering:
We are planning several team days to enhance the training of our staff. For example to train staff on having a better understanding of how each individual we support at Varty Road communicates giving their consent. We have an Involvement Team within Choice Support who specialise in communication to help us with this training.
Our staff recruitment and training will be increased reviewed and strengthened.
Our senior manager will mentor and observe support being provided at Varty Road in order to give continuous practice feedback to all staff and the manager based at the service. Staff support and team meetings will be carried out more frequently.
Our financial checks will be reviewed and strengthened.
A system of spot checks have been set up by the local senior manager to check on progress of all the actions to improve our service at Varty Road.
