Chicks in time for Easter!
A Choice Support service in Cheshire is hatching chicks, just in time for Easter!
In Cheshire, Choice Support has a small, dedicated service supporting three individuals who share a love of animals and birds.
A little while ago they had the idea to try raising their own chicks. The team put their heads together and one staff member, Margaret Madeley, expressed that her daughter Carla, who used to work for Choice Support, would be able to provide the experience for free.
Carla provided the equipment, eggs, and detailed instructions, which the team followed with great care. Margaret was in almost every day to ensure the procedure was being followed correctly and safely, and even showed other team members what to do when she wasn’t available.
Just in time for Easter, the eggs have hatched into baby chicks in a beautiful range of colours from black and grey, to yellow and brown. These many colours are due to Carla providing a range of different types of eggs.
The service was able to keep the baby chicks for two weeks, having been shown how to feed them and keep them warm. When their proper feathers started coming through, they had to be passed back, but the service has said they hope to do this again, and maybe even get their own chicken coup.
One of the best things to have come out of this experience has been improving the communication between people we support and their families, and also having grandchildren coming in to meet the baby birds.
