What are days for?
Our CEO, Sarah Maguire, reminds us what days were like before the pandemic, and how we can make the most of each day in lockdown.
The vlog this week is called What are days for? This week, like many of you, I have heard of first-hand accounts of people dealing with the loss of loved ones. We have all watched individuals and families on the news reports talking about how they are coping and how they are coming to terms with their loss. What I have heard clearly is that people are living in the here and now, taking it slowly, one day at a time.
Whether at work or home, we have traditionally spent so much of our time planning ahead – months and sometimes years in advance. Knowing what comes next makes us feel safe and more assured. It gives us something to look forward to, to work towards. At the moment, it is hard to plan for two weeks, let alone two months, or two years in advance.
There is no pause button that we can press while we wait for these bad times to change. Maybe we need to adjust so we can move forward into the unknown, making the most of our days as they come?
As the poet Philip Larkin said:
“What are days for?
Days are where we live.
They come to us; they wake us.
Time and time over.
They are to be happy in.
Where can we live but days?”
It may be hard for us to remember right now, but days are for being happy, and will be happier once again soon.
See you next week.
