Eddie's new home

Nearly two years ago, Eddie was able to move into his own home, and his family have shared their thoughts on his amazing progress.
It is so heartening to hear when things have gone well, and we would like to share one family’s thoughts. Marie, Eddie’s mum, writes about her experience in this blog: “If you’d said to me two years ago my son would be living in his own home, happy and contented I wouldn’t have believed you.”
She continues: “The reality of Covid and looking after three family members with special needs and physical disabilities was more than challenging (as it was for everyone at the time), but age is not on my side, and I could no longer give my youngest son what he needed and deserved.
After every school saying they couldn’t meet his needs it dawned on us as a family that we need to look at supported living. The thought of it terrified us, broke my heart, and so the journey started into the unknown. Looking back, we couldn’t have chosen a better service provider. Abby Burt gently guided us through all the steps with compassion and understanding for how we were feeling.”
While looking into supported living accommodation, Eddie’s family worked closely with Choice Support staff to establish the best methods of care possible for Eddie. One of the many people this included was Abby Burt, Complex Care Lead, whose job it is to help design bespoke support services for people with complex support needs.
Marie continues: “Going forward with the move was the hardest thing we’ve ever done as parents, but we now know that letting go isn’t a bad thing, it’s a gift that we gave him, a gift of independence and a fun packed happy life.
I recently sent Abby and all the staff an email, it says:
Dear Abby,
Now that Eddie has been in his new home for nearly a year, I just wanted to put in writing how Jason and I feel about things.
Firstly, I wanted to thank you for your continued help and support, you are always there if we’ve had questions and need advice, so thank you.
Secondly, all the staff that work with Eddie have gone above and beyond to make the past year a complete success and their dedication, support and commitment melts our hearts. They are always so supportive, not just to Eddie but to us as a family, helping us with the process of letting Eddie spread his wings to fly.
All the things he does now we could never have done at home. We’ve seen him blossom and grow into a wonderful young man and get to spend more quality time with him. We miss him dearly every second of the day but feel so comfortable and assured that he’s with the best people in his own home.
Please pass our heartfelt thanks to everyone Including the night staff too.
Eddie went to his new home a teen boy and is now a man. We see him every week and speak to staff every day but he’s always in our hearts.
