Recruitment FAQs

How do I apply for a role?

You will see all of our vacancies advertised under either the support worker jobs or the business support jobs. To apply click on the job you are interested in and simply complete the short form at the bottom of the page.

What time of day do vacancies close?

Vacancies will close at 11:59pm on the specified closing date.

We reserve the right to close vacancies earlier should we receive a high level of interest therefore we encourage you to apply at your earliest opportunity.

What can I expect from the recruitment process?

CVs will usually be shortlisted as soon as possible after they are submitted and certainly within two weeks of the closing date (where one is given). If you are successfully shortlisted for interview, you will be advised of the date, time, venue and arrangements for the interview.

For some roles, we will arrange a telephone discussion with you. This is to get to know you a bit more and understand whether this is the right opportunity for you, as well as to answer any questions you may have. If you are successful in this process, we will invite you to an interview.

After the interview if you are successful, you will be contacted by the recruiting manager and offered the position. If you are unsuccessful, you will receive an email or telephone call advising you of the outcome.

Unfortunately, due to the number of CVs we receive, we are unable to contact candidates who are unsuccessful at the shortlisting stage. If you have not heard from us within three weeks of your CV being submitted (or of the closing date for the role) please assume that, on that occasion, your application has not been progressed.

What pre-employment checks apply to my application?

All appointments are subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks which include references, medical, right to work in the UK and a DBS check if required.

You will need to provide two referees in your application form covering a three year period and one of these must be your current employer. The quicker we receive satisfactory references, medical clearance, your right to work in the UK and DBS, the sooner we can give you a start date. If you have a subscription to the DBS update service please make sure you let us know.

What is a DBS check?

DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service. A DBS check is a way for employers to check your criminal record, to help decide whether you are a suitable person to work for them. This includes deciding whether it is suitable for you to work with children or vulnerable adults.

What if I have spent or unspent criminal convictions?

We are open to employing people with past criminal convictions and are a “Ban the Box” employer. Because of the nature of our work with vulnerable adults, most of our vacancies are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and there are some offences that we are unlikely to be able to accommodate. However, we do employ a number of people with a criminal record and having a criminal conviction will not automatically prevent you from being employed by us.

We will discuss any disclosure with you before a final decision to employ you is made and we will conduct a risk assessment, based on the nature of the conviction and the role. If the conviction is unsuitable for the role you have been offered, the offer of employment will be withdrawn.

Failure to disclose a conviction/caution, which subsequently comes to our attention, will be viewed very seriously and may result in the withdrawal of an offer of employment or your dismissal. Choice Support complies with the DBS Code of Practice for Registered Bodies and other recipients of Disclosure Information.

A copy of the Code of Practice will be made available to any applicant upon request.

Do you offer sponsorship?

Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK before they apply for a vacancy. Unfortunately Choice Support are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

What are the standard working hours?

Our support roles provide services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We recruit full-time, part-time and casual staff, to cover the hours we need to provide. Most staff are recruited to work a flexible shift pattern and can work seven days per week, however, we do have opportunities in some locations for people to work more fixed shifts. These will be included in the advertisement.

Business support roles can offer some flexibility with working hours. Please let the recruiting manager know at your interview if you need flexibility.

Do you offer flexible working patterns?

If you are only available to work limited shifts please put this within your covering letter and discuss this at interview or you will be appointed to work flexible shifts and will be expected to work flexibly, including evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays.

If you are doing an office-based role, you will need to inform the recruiting manager in your application, as well as at interview, if you want to work more flexible hours.

What is involved in a support worker role?

We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic people or people with mental health needs. No two lives are the same, so how you support each person will be different. Some of the people we support will be able to communicate really well and others may not. Some may be able to do many things for themselves, whilst others may need more help.

The role may involve accompanying someone to the shops or cinema and social activities. The role will also include assisting with basic housekeeping such as cooking and cleaning. It may be helping someone to learn a new skill or supporting them during a care planning meeting with a social worker. Some individuals also require support with intimate personal care (eg using the toilet or bathing).

What training do you provide support workers?

We are committed to learning and development and will provide you with the training that you need to excel in your role. We provide a structured induction, regular ongoing training and support to achieve qualifications, if necessary. We will also offer you the opportunity to progress your career in a care provider with an excellent reputation and promotion opportunities nationally.

Do I need any qualifications for the support worker role?

Whilst some experience and qualifications are a bonus to this particular role, we offer full training and induction to support you. We also offer many more training and qualification courses which you can undertake once you start with us. We support our staff with their own personal development and career progression.

Do you work with recruitment agencies?

We do not usually work with recruitment agencies, we work with our candidates directly. Choice Support will not be accountable for introduction fees where a unsolicited CV is received.
