Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Trial
Natasha Furness, our Head of Learning & Development (L&D), writes about a significant trial we are taking part in to improve mandatory training.
“We jumped at the opportunity when BILD, an organisation founded in 1971 to improve support for people with disabilities, approached us to consider being a partner in this exciting project. The training is named after Oliver McGowan, a young autistic man whose death highlighted the need for health and social care staff to have better access to training.
Choice Support are delighted to be part of this initiative, to truly co-produce training with Experts by Experience (ExE), and help them make a significant impact to the sector. ExEs are people with first-hand experience of health and social care services, who are best qualified to assess service quality. We started ExE work with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in 2010 which has now expanded to ExEs offering expertise as consultants to help various other organisations develop their understanding and practice.
The ExEs will co-design the training content and co-facilitate all the sessions we deliver at Choice Support. My L&D team and our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) team will also be involved, working together with the ExEs.
Mandatory training is something we are truly passionate about, to make a meaningful and real difference to the lives of people being supported who have a learning disability or autism.
We want to ensure:
- all our staff fully understand the perspective of people we support
- apply the core underlying principles of the support we offer
- that knowledge is understood by staff and their skills are applied
- that we make a positive impact to all those we support.”
