We're committed to anti-racism
Helen Choudhury, our Diversity and Inclusion manager, tells us about her aims as she launches Choice Support’s Anti-racism statement of intent.
The Black Lives Matter protests and the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities have shown us, and the rest of the world, that systemic racism exists everywhere.
Here at Choice Support we are launching our Anti-racism statement of intent. We want to move towards more racial equality, creating an organisational culture that concentrates on human rights and equity. We want everyone at Choice Support to know that their life experiences are respected, acknowledged and valued.
I have worked in the anti-discrimination field for 18 years. I have also worked as a lawyer, a qualified teacher, ran my own consultancy, and worked as a global diversity and inclusion specialist. I have faced many barriers in my life, but I did not let this stop me from achieving my goals.
I do what I do because I know from previous personal and professional experience that there are barriers within every workplace. Across the UK there are many employees who experience prejudice, racism, discrimination, and hatred because their face doesn’t fit. Yes, my job is challenging. I may not make everybody happy, but I know that I will be helping to create a safe, happy, healthy and inclusive work environment. A workplace where colleagues, from all ethnic backgrounds, are confident that they can be their true selves and that their opinions will be respected, heard, and acted upon.
Choice Support wants to ensure that there are opportunities for every staff member to develop and progress. That there will be role models who our staff can identify with, and most of all to create a workplace where they truly feel they belong.
