Choice Support staff talk about their experience of delivering The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism.
Oliver McGowan died in 2016, at the age of 18, due to a severe reaction to anti-psychotic medication he was prescribed for a seizure. However, Oliver was not mentally ill, he was an autistic person and had learning disabilities. A review found that if staff, at the hospital where he was being treated, had had a better understanding of autism and learning disabilities his life could have been saved.
Sally Dunne, our Learning and Development Lead, and Mark Rawlings, an Admin Support Assistant, spoke to Care Management Matters, a social care management journal, about this important training.
