Mental Health Awareness Week 2025

For Mental Health Awareness Week, we are bringing you the story of three green-fingered ladies that transformed their garden into a beautiful space.
Anna, Gina, and Charlotte wanted to do something to combat the ‘winter blues’. Like many of us, winter is a time of the year they find particularly difficult, with the shorter days and nights drawing in sooner.
During a house meeting, they came up with the idea of doing up their garden and renovating the disused garage, so they would have an amazing outdoor space they can use in the summer, as well as somewhere to go all year round.
The women, along with their families, team leader Justine and the staff all mucked in. They have been busy planting vegetables, creating a greenhouse, potting plants and flower beds, and sourcing items from Facebook to kit out the garage, which is now an inviting space to relax and to do activities.
The project has helped the ladies' mental health through the cold winter months, when they can’t get out as much to see people and tend to self-isolate. Justine and the team say they have seen a ‘considerable change’ in the ladies’ mood fluctuations and the number of bad days they would normally see during winter.
Anna, Gina and Charlotte have designed their garden with the intention of supporting positive mental health. There’s even a mindfulness area and a space for morning yoga sessions which everyone can get involved in.
They now wake up every morning to water the plants and tend to their crops.
And they are not finished yet. They are now planning a water feature for their outdoor sanctuary.
