Preventing sexual harm
Winner of Winston Churchill Fellowship, Sue Sharples, Chair of U-Night Group in Lancashire, calls for your involvement in her research to prevent sexual harm.
I'm excited and proud to let you know that I’ve been awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to travel to the USA and Canada. I’ll be going later in the year to study approaches to preventing sexual harm to people with a learning disability, particularly the use of 'sexual self-advocacy' and educational programs. I hope to return with new ideas that we can implement in the UK and of course Supported Loving will be a key priority.
Thank you to everyone who has been a support and inspiration over the last few years, assisting in the development of the training, and the excellent partnership work we’ve done in Lancashire. This has given me the confidence and the drive to want to achieve more, with the benefit of a global perspective.
My aim is to include everyone in this project, especially self-advocates. So, I will be sending out a request shortly for your suggested questions that I can put to organisations and individuals that I will be visiting. Your help in completing this will be much appreciated. In addition, I'll be finding ways of ensuring that you are able to follow my travels and be the first to hear about the results, once I return.
Very best wishes and thanks
