Work and life skills
Meet Matt, the tireless volunteer with a wicked sense of humour, who is giving back to his community.
Matt was nominated for The Nantwich Salt of the Earth Awards earlier this year. The awards recognise individuals and groups that ‘give up their time and energy’ for others.
The 34-year-old has been volunteering in various cafes in Cheshire for 13 years. In this time, he’s also volunteered at Sense and at Belong, a purpose-built community village for older people in Crewe, and is a regular face seen out litter picking.
He has also raised money for Autism Inclusive and The Wingate Centre, an independent charity supporting children and adults with special educational needs and disabilities, by doing Sponsored bikes rides and triathlons.
During Covid, Matt combined two of his favourite pastimes; music and helping others, by taking part in a ‘Danceathon’ outside his parent’s house to raise money for The Wingate Centre.
“Matthew has been coming to us for over 15 years. In that time, he has taken part in many fundraising events. This not only raises much needed funds for equipment but also, the profile of The Wingate Centre.” Natalie – Head of Sport and Recreation
A sense of worth
Matt says he likes to volunteer because he loves meeting new people, it gets him out and keeps him busy. It gives him a routine and a sense of worth.
He is a Crewe Alexandra Football Club season ticket holder, and attends matches regularly. He also likes to swim, cycle, go bowling and buy new clothes.
Choice Support has been supporting Matt, who is autistic, for almost as long as he has been volunteering. He has a strong support network and stays with his parents most weekends. He also enjoys spending time with his sister and brother-in-law.
Out of all his jobs, Matt says his favourite is working at the North Street Cafe.
“Matthew is an absolute pleasure to work with and loved by staff, other volunteers, and customers alike.” Rachel – The Haven on North Street.
