CQC is appointing four new Chief Inspectors
Care Quality Commission (CQC) has appointed three out of four new Chief Inspectors who will lead on regulation and improvement across mental health, hospitals, primary and community care, and adult social care and integrated care.
This marks the regulator’s realignment around sector expertise.
Dr Toli Onon appointed as Chief Inspector of Hospitals
Dr Toli Onon (BSc MD FRCOG) is currently Joint Chief Medical Officer and Responsible Officer at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).
With almost 35 years' experience of working in the NHS hospitals sector, she has played a key role in overseeing quality and patient safety improvement initiatives, as well as the professional regulation of MFT’s 2800 medical and dental staff.

She is expected to join the CQC later this year.
Dr Arun Chopra appointed as CQC’s first Chief Inspector of Mental Health
Dr Arun Chopra stepped into the new role of Chief Inspector of Mental Health, created to recognise the crucial importance of mental health services in supporting people to lead fuller, healthier lives, and the need for specialist expertise in regulating these services.
He previously worked as Medical Director of the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland and is a recipient of the President’s Medal, awarded annually by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for those who have made a significant contribution towards improving the lives of people with mental illness.

Dr Chopra took up his role at CQC earlier this month.
Professor Bola Owolabi appointed as Chief Inspector of Primary and Community Services
Professor Bola Owolabi (MRCGP, MFPH Hon, FRSPH) will be joining CQC from NHS England where she is currently Director of the National Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme.
As Chief Inspector of Primary and Community Services, Professor Owolabi will lead on CQC's regulation of some of the most frequently used parts of the health and care system, including general practice and dentistry.

She will join CQC in the summer and will combine her role with her work as a practising GP in the Midlands.
