Black History Month 2025
Choice Support have been immersed in Black History Month this October with a jam-packed calendar of events.
Led by our Diversity and Inclusion Advisor (DIA) and the Diverse Voices network, people have been taking part in online quizzes, lunch and learn sessions, themed book clubs and a special network meeting, which looked at Black history and its intersection with LGBTQ+ history.
There were also lots of in-person events, including an art project, in Kent, where pictures were created by people we support in the same style of Black artists they admired, like American street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Black History Month (BHM) is an opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of Black heritage and culture, and the contribution of Black people to British society.
To keep momentum going, every Friday we asked people to share a photo of themselves doing something to mark BHM, to inspire conversations. People were kind enough to share photos of themselves creating art, listening to Black music artists or watching films by Black directors and actors.
'Standing Firm in Power and Pride'
The theme for this year’s BHM is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride,’ which aims to highlight the profound contributions made to society by Black people. Our DIA helped everyone learn about the significant contributions made by Black people by sprinkling interesting facts throughout the month, including a list of Black inventors.
Of course, acknowledging Black history is not limited to one month of the year. Our Diverse Voices network keeps the conversation going all year round with their regular meetings and events, and our committed Diversity Champions are always on hand to support and listen to colleagues, so everyone is heard.
